Who would leave an elderly person on the side of a highway?
An 83-year-old woman found unconscious in a wheelchair on the side of a highway in Mexico has been identified thanks to the determined work of a private investigator who refused to let the case go cold.
The discovery was made at kilometer 15 on the highway between Matamoros, Tamaulipas and Playa Bagdad when passersby spotted the elderly woman slumped in her wheelchair, left on the roadside like she was nothing more than trash.
Private investigator Ryan Grayson took on the case after receiving an anonymous tip. When I spoke with him about how the investigation unfolded, he walked me through the painstaking process that led to identifying the victim.
“I got an anonymous call with a possible name,” Grayson explained. “From there, I started conducting open source intelligence—basically searching through public records, social media, anything I could find online.”
What he discovered was both heartbreaking and crucial. “I found posts from about five months ago where people were actively looking for this elderly woman. Someone out there knew she was missing.”
Grayson tracked down a phone number connected to those search efforts and made the call. “I showed them photos of the woman we’d found,” he said. “They verified her identity. Her name is Nilda Parrales.”
But the identification raised more questions than it answered. “Here’s what makes this even more disturbing,” Grayson told me. “Nilda doesn’t have any family. No children. No relatives that we can find. So the question becomes—who took her? Who would abandon an 83-year-old woman in a wheelchair on the side of a highway and leave her to die?”
It’s a question that haunts this investigation.
Grayson has been working closely with authorities on both sides of the border. “I’m in constant communication with the Attorney General’s office in Matamoros, Tamaulipas. We’re sharing information back and forth, building this case piece by piece.”
When I asked him about his confidence in solving the case, his determination was unmistakable. “I feel very, very strongly that I’m going to be able to find out who did this,” he said. “Someone dumped this poor woman and left her to die. That’s not something I can just let go.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information about Nilda Parrales or who may have seen anything suspicious in the area is urged to contact authorities in Matamoros or reach out to investigator Ryan Grayson.
This is more than just a case file. This is about justice for a vulnerable woman who deserved better than being discarded on a roadside, and about ensuring whoever is responsible is held accountable.
